Your Itinerary

Day 1

Explore the deep Sahara dunes and nomad culture by 4x4.

Your desert adventure begins when your friendly local driver collects you from your hotel or camp in a comfortable, air-conditioned 4×4. First, we visit the serene Hassi Labied oasis, where you can observe local farmers tending to their lush gardens with traditional irrigation techniques.

Next, we drive to the nearby village of Khamlia. Here, you will be welcomed with a cup of tea and a private performance of traditional Gnawa music, a beautiful spiritual tradition that was brought to Morocco from the other side of the Sahara. Afterwards, we will head deep into the rugged Black Desert (Hamada), a landscape filled with volcanic stones and fossil-rich terrain.

We then drive to the top of a high plateau to visit the historic M’ifis mines, where you can enjoy breathtaking views over the sea of dunes. This is the perfect spot to take photos of the contrast between the dark stones and golden sand. The highlight of the afternoon will be a visit to a Berber nomad family. You will be welcomed into their traditional, hand-woven tent where you can learn about the resilient lifestyle of desert nomads firsthand.

Share a cup of fresh mint tea with the family and learn about their daily routines, livestock, and desert customs. As the sun begins to set, we will head back across the dunes, arriving at your accommodation in Merzouga just in time to enjoy the beautiful colours of the desert sunset.

Is this tour suitable for families with children?

Yes, absolutely. The 4×4 tour is a very popular activity for families. It is safe, comfortable, and provides a great educational experience for children to see how people live in the desert and to encounter the wild landscape.

Our standard excursion focuses on the desert experience, but we can easily arrange for a delicious, authentic lunch—such as a traditional Berber pizza or tagine—either in Khamlia village or at a local desert restaurant upon request.

You can enjoy this tour throughout the year. Morning tours are excellent for cooler temperatures and better light for photography, while afternoon tours are perfect if you want to end your day by watching the sunset from a high desert plateau.
